Interim Presentation - Feedback & Reflection

For the interim presentation, I used the 2x4 format because it was simple to put together and allowed me to present the images in a (somewhat) chronological order.

I began the presentation by talking about an old project of 'Monster Girls' Tarot cards. I explained that this was mainly process driven (screen printing), but I really enjoyed investigating the theme - both visually and the cultural/mythical aspect of it.

I then went on to explain how I felt that my practice had split off in to different paths (commercial, personal/indulgent, business owner) and felt that I didn't really know how to bring it all back together until I began investigating writing during lockdown. Although at the time, I didn't understand the significance of this exploration, I now see that it's been a really valuable research tool to get to this point.

I finished the presentation by rounding up my experiences and intentions going forward - to produce a graphic novel (or novel hybrid), exploring fantasy creatures, socio/political themes and in some way, my own identity as a young woman navigating the world.

It was really useful to pull my work together and vocalise my intentions to peers as it really solidified the direction I want to go in. If I'd have had more time, perhaps it would have been good to address exactly how I am going to produce a graphic novel. What are the industry sectors I should be looking into? How long will it take me to produce a graphic novel? Is it even achievable, or will it be an ongoing project?

Peer feedback was generally positive. A few comments about my "style" reassured me that my work is somewhat cohesive, even if I haven't always felt that. However, one question that really stood out, was whether or not there are already authors/illustrators producing the kind of book I want to. I didn't have an answer at the time, so this will be one of the first points of research going forward.
