Dummy layouts

I thought I had my layouts/format all planned out and that I would be able to just work through the long list of illustrations I had thumbnailed... However, I felt that this needed more development as I was feeling very stuck and perhaps a little bit bored by what I had planned (see below)

Seeing this book in Waterstones recently reminded me that I am not limited to one format or shape. I really liked the space created around the text on some of the pages and how it helped to pace the story and balance the large, detailed illustrations.

Stålenhag Simon and Dunelind, M. (2020) The Electric State. New York: Skybound Books/Gallery Books.

So I have returned to creating dummy layouts for the first couple of pages...

For this one I have chosen to keep the main bulk of the text, however I'm not entirely sure it is necessary?

Without the text, I feel you still get the jist of what is happening and it might even slow it down a little more. In my earlier research and reflection, I mentioned that I really liked how the panels in Heartstopper (Oseman, 2019) varied a lot. I feel very new to figuring these things out, so for this first chapter, I think I may allow myself a lot of room for experimentation.
