Dummy Book Prep

I have decided that this first submission point would be a good opportunity to begin creating a dummy book. As my novel is an ongoing project, I have decided that it is sensible to aim to have the first chapter script written and to create a dummy of just that to begin with. I already have this script prepared as a first draft, so I set out planning the following three chapters too. I kept this really simple, and jotted down ideas for the beginning, middle and end. This has really helped me to approach the pacing of the novel and when key characters should be introduced.

Then I went ahead and began to outline which parts of the first chapter I thought would need illustrating. I made a note of what the illustration could look like and I will use this to inform my sketches / layout planning.

I have begun sketching out thumbnails for these selected areas of text. I have tried to draw 9 different variations for each one so that I can explore alternative compositions. This could be a lot of work, so I am purposefully keeping it very loose at this stage. My next step will be to cut out these thumbnails and start piecing together a physical dummy book.
