Revisiting an earlier sketch

During our visit to Cliffe Castle, I drew a very quick version of a large blue vase:

The vase was situated some distance away from me, so I couldn't make out the details - I was just drawn to the colour and white patterns on it. I knew I wanted to revisit it and draw something more refined. As I primarily used two colours for my observational sketches, I decided to keep this theme and developed the following drawing:

Although I am very comfortable with digital drawing, I would usually follow the same sort of process - sketch layer, refined layer, line art layer and then finally a colour layer. However, for this piece, I wanted to work quickly and ended up skipping out the sketch and line layers. I drew simple shapes and block colours instead.

Although there isn't much context to this image, it was useful to explore another side of the digital drawing process. I enjoyed drawing the decorative patterns and it reminds me of vases depicted in Ancient Greece, which were often used to tell some sort of narrative.
