In The Shapes of Stories, Vonnegut poses the theory that all stories have 'ups' and 'downs' that can be plotted on a graph.

Vonnegut theorises that when stories are plotted out as such, there are patterns/categories that most stories can fit into. For example;

- Man in a Hole - The main character finds themselves in trouble, gets out of it and ends up better off for the experience.

- Boy Meets Girl - Main character comes across something wonderful, gets it, loses it, then gets it back forever. This could be as straightforward as a romance story.

Vonnegut's theory is that these predetermined 'story plots' have already been proven to be enjoyable for the audiences, so provide a kind of template/recipe to work to - or subvert/challenge.
