Eight Myths and Misconceptions about Witchcraft

- Witches were not burned at the stake in English speaking countries. It was a felony in England and American colonies. In Scotland, witches were strangled to death and then burned.

- 30-60k people were executed in the main era of witchcraft persecutions

- Only 25% of those tried across this period in England were found guilty and executed. 

- Total number of people tried in England was no more than 2,000.

- All 4 of the major western Christian denominations persecuted witches to some extent. Eastern Christian or Orthodox churches carried out almost NO witch hunting.

- In England, the majority of those accused were women, however in other countries including Scandinavia, men were the slight majority. In England, most of the ACCUSERS were women.
