"A Modern Guide to Witchcraft and Magick" Harmony Nice

Nice, H. (2019) Wicca: A modern guide to witchcraft & magick. New York: Seal Press.

I selected this as study material because the author is a young, contemporary Wicca. Nice talks about her personal journey with Wicca and navigating the practice in more recent times.

Nice defines as Witchcraft and Wicca as two different things; Wicca is a nature based religion that teaches tolerance, diversity and acceptance - solitary or in a coven.

Popular culture has brought witchcraft into the public eye, from Buffy, Bewitched, True Blood and The Chilling Adventure's of Sabrina. These particularly are viewed by millennials and below.

This has brought much more acceptance - "People from all backgrounds, cultures, races, genders and sexualities are finding their feet in Wicca." Pg 8.

"It's a religion that promotes equality in all; one that hasn't been warped to suit one gender or race and has flexibility" Pg 8.

Nice attributes the rise of Wicca to social media - accessibility of guides teachings, tools, community.

Popularity of the witch aesthetic.

WICCA: Pagan, witchcraft based religion - follows pagan beliefs and practices witchcraft as part of their faith.

PAGAN: Someone who follows nature based religion (wicca, druidry, asatru). Pagans can be monotheistic or polytheistic. All of their practices follow the earth - natural occurrences such as the seasons, sun and moon cycles.

WITCHCRAFT: This is a practice. They pratice magick and use the energy of the earth to achieve a desired result - divination, future prediction, ritual work, spells, potions, herbalism. A witch is simply someone who practices witchcraft in some shape or form. It is often just one element of someone's path.
